Learn Our History Today: On August 3, 1949, the NBA, a.k.a. the National Basketball Association, was formed when the Basketball Association of America (BBA) and the National Basketball League (NBL) merged, forming the NBA. This new NBA was made up of 17 teams, both new and old, and they were spread out over both small and large cities. Unfortunately, through the 1950s support for these many teams dwindled, and by 1954 only eight remained. That year the NBA revolutionized the game by creating the 24 second clock, greatly increasing the pace of the game and therefore made it much more fun to watch. This brought more and more fans to the games, and popularity began to rise.

Throughout the late 1950s and into the 60s, the Boston Celtics were the dominant team, winning eight straight championships under the leadership of Center Bill Russell. Famous at this time period was Russell’s bitter rivalry with Wilt Chamberlain, who played Center for the Philadelphia 76ers, among other teams. In 1979, popularity surged even more for the NBA as the three point shot was invented and stars such as Larry Bird and Magic Johnson entered the game. In 1984, Michael Jordan entered the game as well, and he is considered by many to be the greatest player in NBA history, winning six championships with the Chicago Bulls in the 1990s and winning five MVP awards. Today there are 30 franchises, each attracting millions of fans per year, and NBA athletes are known as being the highest paid in professional sports when looking at average salary.
